Manifesto

Vision & Mission

The Green AI Committee will shape the GSF's strategy in building knowledge, standards, and tooling to ensure that the development and application of AI results in the least amount of environmental harm possible to support net zero ambitions.

Scope & Responsibilities

The committee has devolved power from the GSF SC to run autonomously within the scope defined below.

Scope

Focus on “what humans can do to build Green AI” - Reducing the environmental impact of AI. Considering whatever can generate environmental impacts from AI.

We won’t focus on what AI can do for sustainability, Responsible AI or AI Safety.

Responsibilities

  • Have a holistic view across all projects to ensure green AI is applied consistently.
  • Propose Green AI projects for various working groups.
  • Propose Green AI features for existing GSF projects.
  • Propose guests and speakers for the GSF's blog, podcasts, and events.

Externally

  • Define, publish, and maintain the public position and strategy of the GSF concerning Green AI.
  • Coordinate and partner with other non-profits, governments, and regulators regarding Green AI policy.
  • Respond to external media requests regarding Green AI.

  • Supporting the development of an ISO standard for measuring AIs environmental impact, similar to the SCI specification.
  • Responding to a media request from CNN about the implications of an AI regulation proposal, where your quote will be credited to you as a member of the GSF Green AI Committee.

Authority

This standing committee has devolved power from the Steering Committee to run autonomously within the scope defined below. They should endeavour to keep the Steering Committee current on relevant information.

The committee has the authority to propose new projects across the GSF, read about Untitled.

Decision Making

The committee operates on a consensus basis; all representatives must agree on changes. If consensus is unachievable, a supermajority vote will resolve any discord.

The committee will have representatives from around the world. To ensure an effort is made to reach a consensus, the committee should work async-first through discussions and collaboration on documents, forums, and emails. If the committee can't resolve an issue async, then the committee will schedule meetings with key parties to reach a consensus.

Limitations

  • The Steering Committee retains the right to ratify any of the deliverables generated
  • The Communications Committee must have the opportunity to provide comment on all content deliverables ahead of publications
